Our Philosophy

At the Sherman Early Childhood Center, we believe that each child is a capable and unique individual. We engage children in experiential learning, enriched by Jewish values, in a warm and caring environment.

At the Sherman Early Childhood Center, we provide a high quality, inclusive and developmentally appropriate environment for your child to learn and grow.  Through this array of developmentally appropriate approaches, children develop language, cognitive, social-emotional and fine/gross motor skills. Our children are the collaborators in their learning as they make connections, are curious, creative and competent.

Our children are the future citizens of the world and it is our mission to collaborate with parents to build a strong foundation in communication, independence, and social emotional development. Our classrooms live the values that we want our children to embrace and practice- to be kind and have empathy, to take care of each other and the community, to collaborate and solve problems, to persist through challenging tasks, to speak up when something is not right, to celebrate and embrace differences, and to love learning.

We nurture children and families in a safe and supportive community. Our program strives to meet the individual needs of each and every child and encourages them to explore their environment through meaningful, relevant and hands-on experiences. As early childhood professionals, we aim to give each child the opportunity to learn, develop and play to their fullest potential! We collaborate with parents to make sure that our children are getting everything they need to make progress and be challenged.

Our children develop spirituality and an intense feeling of pride in their Jewish heritage, as they observe and participate in Jewish traditions and customs, Shabbat  and holiday observances. The classrooms come alive around the holidays with all the senses!  We make applesauce and honey cakes for Rosh Hashanah, latkes for Hanukkah and hamantaschen for Purim. Ritual items such as kiddush cups and seder plates, Shabbat candles and menorahs, are part of the classroom and offer opportunities for the children to incorporate these items into their play and the children also make their own to bring home. The classrooms transform too, setting the environment for each holiday and celebration.

We love spending time outdoors! Har Shalom’s playground is over 10,000 square feet. There are areas to climb, slide, run and be creative, dig in the sand, bike or use the wagon on the path, swing with friends and garden. We use many of our outside spaces including our side field for movement and sports, our bamboo forest and garden, and patio and we love to sled on the hills in the winter. We are creating memories and building skills both inside and outside!

Learning they love. Learning for life.
